Today is the day for my elf socks, gratitude and gravy. Lots and lots of gratitude and oodles and oodles of gravy on everything.
I struggled with writing this Zenitude because there are those reading who feel that right now there is nothing to be grateful for, so it made me stop writing so as not to offend. And then, I went back to it and said no, that’s just bullshit. Here’s one personal reason.
Last year at this time I was busy in the kitchen, our home smelled of holiday spices and deliciousness, and it was filled with laughter and chatter and family and love. Little did I know that within about 30 days, a blink, I would wake up next to my husband who, at some time during the night – the night before New Year’s Eve – had a stroke. (There go the party plans!) Life was turned upside down and I struggled to find gratitude and hope. So this I know. If I didn’t have humor in my life at that time, I would’ve thrown a pity-party for one and drown myself in gravy and wine. Don’t get me wrong. There were plenty of those moments, but humor filled in the cracks and made all the difference. (Oh, and The Husband is obnoxiously fine now.)
So here is the Power of Gratitude, Gravy and Elf Socks, four simple things that I am thankful for right now (outside of family and friends – that’s a given, yada, yada, yada):
One, the life as I know it to be at this very blink because in another blink it could all change. And you know what, it will all change. At some point. I just don’t know when. And when it changes, it will be up to me to find Zenitude Gratitude within myself and continue blinking and finding humor.
Two, gravy! My grandmother used to make the most mouth-watering gravy known to humankind. I have no idea what elfin magic she used, but I’m thankful for her gravy and I love that gravy reminds me of her.
Three, my elf socks! Because they make The Husband laugh and he starts calling me “Elf” for the next 30 days. (And crazy socks also remind me of my grandmother.)
Oh, and four, taste buds. I’m so grateful for my taste buds!
Zenitude for today:
